3 new Mormon leaders to be named at conference
The selections were announced Saturday during the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ conference in Salt Lake City by quorum member Henry B. Eyring.
They shared with KPVI what inspired them most about this session and their thoughts on the three new apostles that were just named to the Quorum of Twelve.
About 100,000 people are expected to attend one of five sessions held over two days at the conference in Salt Lake City where Mormons gather to hear guidance, inspiration from church s. Millions more watch live broadcasts.
It is a governing body that sets church policy and runs the faith’s business operations. The Lord’s revealed pattern of governance by councils in his church provides for and attenuates the impact of human frailties.
Quorum members serve until they die, and three recent deaths created the void.
However, at the end of his remarks, the church president appeared to lose strength and struggled with the final few sentences of his talk.
Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke of his appreciation for having older men lead the church.
“Not in the smallest part am I able to walk in their shoes; yet I am honored to stand tall on their shoulders and carry on in the Lord’s ministry”, he said. It had been six years since a new quorum member was chosen, and more than a decade since the leadership council had two openings.
That would have been a symbol and recognition of the expanding global reach of a religion that has more than half of its 15 million members outside the United States. Stevenson, 62, and Dale G. Renlund, 60, took their seats among the other apostles, marking the first time in more than a century that three apostles have been sustained on the same day.
The 64-year-old Rasband, who was the senior president of the LDS Quorums of the Seventy, talked about the love of Christ, saying, “I’m confident that there is no choice, sin or mistake that you or anyone else can make that will change his love for you or for them”. They were both chosen in 1984. “I was somewhere between apoplectic and catatonic”, said Renlund, a cardiologist. A total of 14 members of the quorum have been born outside the USA since the church was founded in 1830, according to church officials. “They have returned to their heavenly home”.
The decisions were made by Monson. Though Monson didn’t speak at the news conference, church spokesman Michael Otterson described the selection process as a “profoundly sobering and deeply spiritual” experience.
The Mormon church could name as many as three new high-ranking leaders at a Utah conference this weekend, and scholars predict that for the first time ever, at least one could be from outside North America and Europe.
Stevenson, though, mentioned keeping children anchored in righteous principles is a key challenge to focus on.
Numerous speakers who followed Monson expressed gratitude for the church prophet, including the three newly named apostles and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency as he was conducting the session.
How Apostles Are Chosen After continual fasting and prayer in the mountains, Jesus called twelve disciples to help preach his Gospel and provide the continuation of the church He had established. “To be a special witness of the name of Christ is our premiere and foremost calling”.
