3 shot to death, dozens hurt in Chicago over July 4 weekend
The only fatal shooting of the weekend occurred in the 700 block of N California Ave in the West Town neighborhood at around 3:30 a.m., according to police. At least 63 people were shot over the Fourth of July weekend in 2015, leaving 10 dead.
Eighty-eight people were arrested ahead of the weekend, Johnson said in a press conference on Thursday, as police targeted individuals from the controversial “Strategic Subject List”. Earlier Sunday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the foot about 10:45 p.m.in the first block of West Cermak Road, police said.
At 1:09 p.m., a person was shot in the right leg and buttocks in the 9800 block of South Ingleside in the Pullman neighborhood. His condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital. Police said he was being uncooperative with investigators. All four had their conditions stabilized – the children at Comer Children’s Hospital and the adults at the University of Chicago Hospital. He was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. His vehicle then crashed into two parked vehicles. Officials said he was not cooperating with investigators, police said.
Late Sunday, a man was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The boys, ages 16 and 17, are in stable condition this morning. A total of 88 people were arrested on various felony and misdemeanor charges.
Johnson said that in 2014, there were 16 killed on Fourth of July weekend.
Most of that time was quiet, but during an eight-hour spasm of violence, 30 people were shot, three of them fatally, including a 7-year-old boy. Someone fired at them after stepping out of a green van in the 7200 block of South Lowe Avenue, police said.
This year’s violence includes one victim killed in a stabbing on the South Side. Early Saturday, one man was killed and another was wounded in an East Garfield Park neighborhood shooting on the West Side.
Perhaps more troubling than the number of those shot, was the inability of city police to quell the violence. Another man was also wounded in the shooting.
It appeared to be largely successful until the late-weekend upsurge. A second man who was in a vehicle was wounded in the same incident. The man ran away and was shot in the side, leg and arm. Badillo, of the 400 block of North Trumbull, was shot in the neck and pronounced dead at the scene at 3:41 a.m., authorities said. He was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to police.
Just before 5 a.m., a 33-year-old woman was walking in the 12300 block of S Halsted in the West Pullman neighborhood when she heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. He was in the 9200 block of S Throop when someone entered the garage and opened fire, according to police.
