3 things to watch for in Seahawks second preseason game
As a whole, the team looked much better this week as they continue to prepare for the regular season.
The Jets asked “Geno who?” as two of their quarterbacks had big nights as Geno Smith sat out with the broken jaw he sustained when punched by former team-mate IK Enemkpali last week. Yes, you can evaluate some things from watching these games but what really matters is how the Chiefs play when the games matter and how the team evolves and comes together throughout the season.
“I think, for me, it was a great feeling”, Lockett said. Frank Clark slipped to the bottom of the second round of the draft due to the fact that he’s very possibly a bad person, but he was all over Denver’s backfield in his debut, finishing with a team-high nine tackles, chasing down ball-carriers from behind on screens and forcing a C.J. Anderson fumble. The team added Jimmy Graham to the mix in a trade and he likely will be the top red zone target for Russell Wilson. After negotiations, Wilson got what he wanted in a extension of his contract. In that game Seattle scored 10 points in each half but struggled to move the football consistently, averaging only 3.1 yards per play. Carroll confirmed after the game the team is hosting free agent guard Evan Mathis, a 33-year old who made the Pro Bowl playing for the Eagles the last two years, for a visit.
Smith would throw another touchdown on Friday but to the wrong man. Jermaine Kearse is a postseason hero who does not contribute enough statistically during the Fantasy schedule. There are a few new players to watch this week along with some interesting position battles and injuries to mention, so let’s begin.
After last week’s coming out party against the Broncos, all eyes were on return man/receiver/dynamic offensive weapon Tyler Lockett. The team totaled 89 yards on 24 attempts without starting running back Marshawn Lynch.
Most returners in that situation would arguably take a knee, but Conley didn’t hesitate to take it out before being stopped at the 14-yard line for a 23-yard return.
Graham was targeted three times by Wilson and caught all three passes, gaining 39 yards and showing a glimpse of what he can provide Seattle’s passing attack. He could be an adequate replacement if he learns the system quickly enough. It will be a good test for Howard and the rest of the defensive line. The defense did suffer some late-season injuries and felt the impact of some changes on the line past year, though, and can’t be expected to dominate every week, as the expectation seemed to be after 2013.
Tonight, Hammond continued to show that he was making strides. “There was one earlier that I should’ve picked off too, but (the receiver) caught it so I didn’t want to let him do it again”.
