35 annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday
“This is the ultimate story of inspiration, and it involves such an incredible embodiment of Canadian spirit and that fighting spirit”, said Adam Liefl, a member of the Norfolk Terry Fox Run organizing committee. Betty Fox is in the front row centre, and trip organizer Paula Larrondo is at right.
This year marks the 35 anniversary of Terry Fox’s run across Canada, raising money and awareness for cancer.
The West Shore is no exception. “I truly believe in what Terry Fox has started…”
In 1980, he was just a kid trying to save the world from cancer.
The foundation looks at new ways to expand the yearly run and now reaches out to universities, day cares and seniors homes, not just elementary schools.
Dundas Street from Van Ave to Museum Square will be closed off the event. Marie Cancer Society Branch, the Wawa Branch became the organization who assumed all responsiblity for Terry which included safety, financial accountabilty, public relations and confirmation of accomodations and meals.
“We practice three days a week”, said VanDerToorn.
One takes place at Lakehead University and the other at Audies Hair design on Atherley Road. Tilbury’s run starts at the Tilbury Arena with registration at 10:30am.
“They’ve always said they never imagined the run would last more than a couple of years”.
There will be a 5km route for the event, and participants can take either a 5km or 10km run.
You can run, bike or walk.
Many Canadians will be participating in Terry Fox runs this weekend, but beyond our borders, no country celebrates the legacy of Terry Fox with as much gusto as Cuba. “To see Jared out there…” she says. Yorkton will be part of the national event, with the run happening on September 20.
