4.3-magnitude quake shakes Inland Empire — EARTHQUAKE
The Magnitude 4.8 tremor struck approximately 20 kilometres from Victoria on Vancouver Island (Earthquakes Canada rated the quake at Magnitude 4.3).
The quake, which was centered near Victoria, B.C., and also felt in Vancouver and Bellingham, Wash., struck at 11:39 p.m. PST. Several residents along the Surrey/Delta border stood outside their homes afterward to find out what happend.
He says because it was so far below the surface, even North Saanich residents who were right over the epicentre were still at least 50 kilometres away from the fault zone.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries since the four-pointer on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles city and county fire departments reported no immediate damage or injuries, although surveys of stations and personnel was ongoing.
“I thought it was the people kicking the seats behind us”, he told CTV.
After the quake hit, TransLink shut down the Millennium and Expo SkyTrain lines to determine whether any damage had been caused to the raised guideways.
“I lasted a second, it woke me up and it was done”.
Meantime, south of the border, authorities reported that the quake was widely felt across the northwest Washington State. And it continued, and it got worse and worse. “It woke up the whole neighborhood”. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 or less are usually not felt except by very few under especially favorable conditions, according to the USGS.
Natural Resources Canada said the quake measured 4.3 while the U.S. Geological Survey placed the magnitude at 4.8.
