4 killed in NY wine country when pickup hits limo
A law enforcement official said the extended cab truck T-boned the limo, which was carrying a bridal party, along Route 48 around 6pm Saturday in Cutchogue on the North Fork of Long Island.
The limo was attempting to make a U-turn when the truck slammed into it, nearly cutting it in half. When medics arrived, they discovered three of the women were trapped inside the limo.
According to WCBS-TV, two women, including the bride, remain at Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
The women, who were not identified, appeared to have been part of a group on a wedding party outing who had just departed from one of the dozens of wineries on eastern Long Island, according to witnesses at the scene and authorities.
He is now under police guard in hospital and faces a charge of driving while intoxicated, Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley said.
Vehicles like Limo are common in the area for people visiting the numerous wineries there. Their names were not immediately released, but police said they were from the New York City area. The Suffolk County DA’s office is now involved in the investigation, and there will likely be a press conference offering more information on Sunday. A State police accident reconstruction team inspected the crash site Saturday night.
Saturday’s collision marked the second auto crash with multiple fatalities on Long Island in the last several days. His wife – the children’s mother – escaped uninjured. Both have pleaded not guilty and deny any wrongdoing.
