49ers coach gives heartfelt speech about getting help after cutting a player
He enters the final year on his contract – the Broncos picked up his fifth-year option – and his clean state could work in his favor in contract negotiations.
Smith was arrested Thursday night, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.
“I understand the platform we are on”, he said. “Football doesn’t come into play when it comes to a situation like that”.
Smith has been seeking help and although making significant improvements, he is just having a hard time staying out of trouble with the law. Head coach Jim Tomsula called it “a sad day”, and “a day that doesn’t have anything to do about football”.
Earlier Saturday, Tomsula said he wanted to speak alone in that emotional news conference because he’s more comfortable that way and was merely doing “my job”. “This is a day that doesn’t have anything to do [with] football”. We thought the talented 25-year-old had finally put all his demons behind him.
Smith had stated when camp started he was wholesome and in nice form, “able to go”. He later returned to and was contacted by officers. Smith was arrested at the Los Angeles worldwide Airport after telling TSA agents he had a bomb in April 2014. It has nothing to do with football.
After his release form jail on Friday morning, he denied he was driving under the influence Thursday night, according to video from local television stations.
Smith, upon posting bail, told reporters as he left jail that justice would prevail because: “It wasn’t a DUI”. Tomsula said the team treats each individual on a “consistent” basis and tries to find help for them. Go get it. You’re worth it. We value every human being.
“Hopefully he gets some help”, safety Antoine Bethea added. While Smith still awaits his fate from his latest incident in the courtroom, the suspension that Roger Goodell could slap on him after his criminal case is adjudicated might prevent Smith from playing for anyone any time soon anyway.
On September 20, 2013, Smith was once again arrested in San Jose on suspicion of DUI and possession of marijuana.
Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI in January 2012, a charge that was eventually reduced to reckless driving, then faced three felony weapons charges in June of that same year stemming from a party at his home. Clarke said Smith talked to the owner of the other vehicle and left. Prosecutors declined to file charges in that case.
Still, with great pass rushers a rarity and with coaches, General Managers, and owners hoping to compete for championships, a potential contender has to be thinking about what a focused and eligible Smith could do to make a good team into a potential Super Bowl team. Smith finished with 8 1/2 sacks and 34 tackles in 11 games in 2013.
