49ers’ Colin Kaepernick wants to join Jets next season
Daily News reporter Manish Mehta claims sources tell him Kaepernick, 28, would prefer to play the 2016 season with the New York Jets. Kelly is still considered an offensive innovator who runs a spread-option attack that would seem to suit the quarterback’s strengths.
There are several potential obstacles to this scenario coming to pass, one being that the Jets already have a quarterback they very much want to bring back in Ryan Fitzpatrick.
According to the report, the thought of Kaepernick potentially being the team’s first true franchise franchise quarterback since Mark Sanchez in 2010 is enticing, but the 49ers have expressed interest in starting over with Kaep in a final attempt to make him work in San Francisco, especially with new head coach Chip Kelly on board.
The fact that Kaepernick wants out isn’t a complete shock.
The 49ers then hired former Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly. “Kap’s a great kid, he’s done a lot of great things for us”.
San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke wanted to get rid of Colin Kaepernick at one point in time, especially since the team would not be responsible for his contract if he were gone by this year. If the 49ers aren’t willing to deal their quarterback, then NY could simply stick with Fitzpatrick for the next few years.
Even if Kaepernick thinks he could thrive in Kelly’s system, he might still want out of San Francisco because he’s exhausted of dealing with their front office. After April 1, Kaepernick is guaranteed his $11.9 million salary for the 2016 season.
The 49ers quarterback underwent surgery on his right thumb and left knee in early January. Fitzpatrick was very good for the Jets last season, but he wasn’t able to get them into the playoffs, which could end up costing him if the Jets are interested in Kaepernick.
