49ers cut running back, overlook Hayne
Kawakami noted that the 49ers have “no clue” on how to play Hayne, insisting that the team’s coaching staff has never wanted the Aussie in San Francisco.
The 49ers addeda running back to their injury-depletedunit Wednesday, and rather than promote Jarryd Hayne from their practice squad, they instead signedDuJuan Harris off the Baltimore Ravens’. If Draughn can’t play, the 49ers will likely make another roster move, after dropping Travaris Cadet in favor of Harris on Tuesday.
There’s some doubt about whether 49ers running back Shaun Draughn’s status for this week after he hurt his knee in last Sunday’s loss to the Bengals and the team could turn to a new face in the backfield in the event he can’t go.
Tomsula, in an interview with San Francisco radio station KNBR, praised Hayne’s work ethic, but echoed McGaughey by saying the Australian “just needed to play football and get a feel of the running game”. Tomsula said that Hayne is “real serious” about getting back into the active roster and the Aussie’s development has been progressive. Davis, a rookie who in November was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, is eligible to start practicing with the 49ers this week but can not take part in a game until Week 17.
Draughn, an in-season addition following injuries to backs Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis, was the game’s leading rusher with nine carries for 38 yards at the time of the injury. Hayne dropped three punts in his first six weeks as a member of the 49ers. But with his availability uncertain for the final two games of the season, the 49ers added Harris, who is considered more of an every-down back.
