49ers lose backup QB Thad Lewis to season-ending knee injury

Quite honestly, the Texans’ 24-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara was more than a little sloppy, and the one thing Texan fans were looking forward to – Brock Osweiler throwing the ball around the yard – they only saw in very nondescript, rudimentary throws, with Osweiler going 4 for 7 for 27 yards in his Texans debut. Blaine Gabbert started for San Francisco on Sunday, but Colin Kaepernick is still recovering from his shoulder injury. He hasn’t practiced since last Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers have yet to name a starting quarterback, but Colin Kaepernick is quickly falling out of the race.

Blaine Gabbert, who continues to get all of the first-team practice snaps with Kaepernick unavailable, completed four of seven pass attempts with one interception and three sacks during team drills. Well, in the end, the Cowboys took Prescott in the fourth round, and one preseason game in, they look pretty damn smart for doing so, as he went 10 of 12 for 139 yards and two touchdown passes against the Rams on Saturday night. With Kaepernick out, Lewis replaced Gabbert after three possessions.

“It got to the point where it was just really aggravated and I really couldn’t deal with it on a day to day basis”, Bromley said.

Lewis plans to do his rehabilitation at the team’s facility. In that year, both Marshawn Lynch and Alfred Morris saw their respective career high’s in yards per carry, and while Frank Gore’s wasn’t a career mark, he went from averaging 4.2 and 4.3 in the two previous seasons to almost five yards per carry in 2012.

The 49ers already lost one other newcomer to an ACL this training camp with the injury to wide receiver Eric Rogers. But he doesn’t want to see Kaepernick rush back from what Baalke called a “fatigued” arm. Lewis was heading into his seventh National Football League season.

“There were ups and downs”, Gabbert said.

If he is fully healthy, and if this is truly an open competition, Kaepernick should get the start, but it also means he is likely to face Denver’s vaunted first-team defense. That would be half the preseason without Kelly seeing half of the quarterback competition in action. “Yeah, he can help out”, Day said. “He beat me there, which is great”.

Gabbert finished 4 for 10 for 63 yards and a touchdown. Even if that something is just providing another warm body to throw passes during practice. “It’s nothing that’s a long-term thing. He’s excited to get back on the field to show what he can do”. Smelter’s status is “week to week”.

“Obviously, the goal is to get him out there and have him play”, Baalke said. Another option is Joshua Garnett, a first-round draft pick who’s been backing up Zane Beadles at left guard.

I mean, Kelly shouldn’t care too much about that contractual/feud stuff, right? Kelly said that has not been discussed, and it’s not out of the question. Back to Prescott – the knocks on him coming out of Mississippi State were the offense that he ran (Tim Tebow-ish spread) and accuracy issues (which he actually seemed to clear up his senior year, but whatever).
