49ers put Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve

Colin Kaepernick will undergo surgery Tuesday morning in Vail, Colo., to fix the season-ending injury in his left, non-throwing shoulder, a source close to the quarterback said Monday. Gabbert will start his first road game for the 49ers Sunday in Seattle.

Trent Baalke today said it’s too soon to say whether quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose season ended Sunday when he was placed on injured reserve, has played his final snap for the 49ers. He completed 144 of 243 passes, which is 59 percent, for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in those eight games, according to Fox Sports. This means the 49ers will simply cut him if no trade partner is found, and Kaepernick’s stock value right now isn’t at an all-time high, not showing he’s capable of developing his play reading ability over the last few years. With Kaepernick out, the 49ers promoted Dylan Thompson from the practice squad to the active roster to back up Gabbert. Kaepernick, however, has not appeared on an injury report for anything regarding his left shoulder and was a surprise addition this week. It’s plain as day to see when you don’t execute what you’re supposed to do as a player, the game kind of gets away from you. Coach Jim Tomsula had been non-committal on who will quarterback the team for the rest of the season.

Thompson originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of SC on May 5, 2015.

The 49ers have lost four in a row to Seattle and six of seven, held to single digits in their past three defeats with just one touchdown while getting outscored 56-13. Recovery time is estimated at 4-6 months.

This season was the worst of Kaepernick’s career.
