49ers sign former CFL receiver Eric Rogers
The 49ers top two receivers in 2015 were 35-year-old Anquan Boldin, who finished with just 789 yards and Torrey Smith, who caught a disappointing 33 passes.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed Canadian Football League standout wide receiver Eric Rogers to a two-year, $1.19 million maximum value contract, according to a source not authorized to speak publicly. He got a $125,000 signing bonus, plus $100,000 of his first year salary guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Rogers is set to sign with the 49ers.
Eric Rogers is the first player to sign with the San Francisco 49ers in the Chip Kelly era.
“When he got hired by the Niners, he called me or two or three hours after it got announced that they were going to hire him”, Rogers told the Calgary Sun.
On Dec. 14, the 49ers hosted Rogers, a standout from the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders franchise, for a workout session-he met with 11 other teams on the same terms, including the New England Patriots.
Although Rogers’ addition doesn’t immediately erase wide receiver as a position of need in the draft or free agency, it does add depth and a possible weapon. He was waived after training camp, and joined the Portland Thunder of the Arena Football League, before ultimately heading north and collecting a record season with Calgary.
A native of Glendora, Calif., Rogers has been a force ever since his arrival late in 2014. “He was like, You re the first player I called and I want you to be the first player I sign at my new job”.
