5 arrested after shots fired on police in Washington
Police initially arrested four other people, but released them from custody because they “appeared to be victims of robbery”. WTOP reported that, about 30 minutes later, three women and two men surrendered to police.
When they arrived at the scene near an elementary school in southeast Washington, D.C. just after midnight, individuals reportedly opened fire from inside an SUV.
The latest incident follows protests over police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas last week.
Police said Alverson was arrested after being shot in the leg and trying to run away.
Sternbeck said police were alerted by ShotSpotter, a sensor that detects gunfire, to the possibility of a shooting near that location. A police spokesman said officers returned fire as the people in the SUV barricaded themselves inside their vehicle. Sternbeck says that “We do not have information that this was a planned attack on police”.
The only lookout was for a black vehicle.
