5 firefighters injured after tractor-trailer hits fire truck
The Georgia State Patrol say a fatal wreck on Wednesday involved four tractor-trailers and a small pickup truck, killing two people. Five firefighters were injured. Doctors at Hahnemann Hospital treated the firefighters while the truck driver went to Jefferson Hospital – all in stable condition.
Smith said the driver of a black Chevy Malibu, registered in Monroe County, was unaware of the stopped traffic and rear-ended the tractor-trailer.
The crash forced I-75 to be shut down for several hours, impacting morning commuters. Action News is told the injuries to all the firefighters were minor.
People stuck at the scene for hours have gotten out of their cars and walked around because they have not been able to move.
I-75 northbound was congested due to a previous tractor-trailer accident, according to Henry County Police Department spokesman Capt. Joey Smith.
Smith stated that all lanes were open as of 8 a.m.; however, traffic congestion was still heavy. The jackknifed big rig was finally removed at 6:40 a.m. They then cleared the crashed vehicles and got the roadway reopened shortly after 7 a.m.
