5 potential replacements for P.J. Fleck as Western Michigan head coach
That is no longer the case. Minnesota players considered skipping the Holiday Bowl this season because of the university’s treatment of the 10 players involved in the sexual assault investigation.
Claeys defended his team on Twitter after the boycott was announced, writing: “Have never been more proud of our kids”.
“This is just the beginning, there’s so much more for WMU football, they have unlimited amounts of growth potential and I can’t wait to see where it goes”, Miller said.
“I look forward to meeting my new players and getting to know them as quickly as possible”. We gave our best to the state of Minnesota and we’ll always come to Minnesota. While at Northern Illinois, he worked under Jerry Kill, who left NIU to take over at Minnesota following the 2010 season. My daughter is there. “We finished 9-4. But if I could show you all the emails I got after the Wisconsin game”, Coyle said of the 31-17 loss in Madison to end the season.
“I won’t be stepping foot back in the stadium”, Kill told 1500 ESPN radio in Minneapolis this week.
“This is a great area and we want to spend a lot of time recruiting in a six-hour radius”. I think things are not being handled right.
Before anyone mentions the ethics of this, let me stop you. The Gophers recently fired HC Tracy Claeys.
Earlier this week, Western Michigan’s PJ Fleck met with the Minnesota football program regarding its head coaching vacancy.
The Gophers also want an apology from university president Eric Kaler and athletic director Mark Coyle.
Fleck was 30-22 at Western Michigan, including a 13-1 record and a MAC Championship this past season. But would he take the job?
Since his 1-11 debut season, Fleck is 29-11 at WMU. Kill declined to comment on Fleck on Wednesday.
The Star Tribune adds that if the deal with Fleck does not go through, Minnesota is prepared to go with former LSU head coach Les Miles as a back-up plan.
Fleck becomes the youngest head coach in FBS college football at 32, as he was hired away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was an assistant coach for the NFL team.
The sanction also may infringe the rights of Claeys under the state whistleblower law.
There was speculation that Minnesota’s treatment of Claeys could cost them a chance at Fleck. Fleck will instill a level of daily focus by the Minnesota players (and anyone that studies him) that any chaos that had been evident (the team temporarily voted to boycott its bowl game appearance last month before relenting) will be gone.
