5 shot at Minneapolis police protest
“We need change for all because I believe the police can offer the protection and service they project instead of hiding behind a mask of injustice”, Laddea said. He declined to comment to The Associated Press. Minneapolis police have said Clark was a suspect in the assault.
Authorities raided the man’s Bloomington home and seized a dozen weapons.
Protesters have constantly occupied the 4th Precinct since soon after the shooting.
Wesley Martin, a friend of Clark, was one of five injured in the late-night shooting. Clark was using crutches and says he will keep pushing for justice for his cousin, Jamar. Protests by activist groups such as Black Lives Matter have become commonplace in USA cities. An officer who answered the phone at the 4th Precinct confirmed that shots were fired and said that there were no injuries or arrests. On Tuesday morning, police arrested a 23-year-old white man for the shooting. A Hennepin County District Court Judge has granted the county attorney’s office until Monday at noon to making a charging decision on the suspects. The demonstrations in Chicago Tuesday night were not violent, however they were definitely not composed.
Protesters have constantly occupied the area around the police station since shortly after the shooting.
Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau on Twitter called the officers “true professionals” and noted that “MPD worked nonstop through the night to bring justice in last night’s shooting”.
His funeral earlier Wednesday attracted hundreds of people. Inside, his obituary said the 24-year-old man “liked to swim, fish, listen to music, play basketball, be with family and take trips to Charlotte, N.C”.
Protesters have won a couple of their original demands: for there to be an independent federal investigation into the shooting and for names of the two officers involved in the incident to be released.
“Jamar, your life did and does have objective”. Attempts to reach relatives on Wednesday were unsuccessful. “We are not going nowhere”, said Jayme Ali, a protester and pastor at God of All Saints Church, according to CBS Minnesota.
Ali spoke outside the church hosting Clark’s funeral. One protester was shot in the stomach, they said.
Protester Jie Wronski-Riley, who is also on the security team, said most of the crowd stopped following the men about midway up the street, but a few protesters gave chase.
Activists have vowed to continue protests over Clark’s killing and called again for the release of video related to his shooting.
At least two of the three men who had been taunting protesters were firing guns, said Wronski-Riley, who described the incident as “really chaotic, really fast”.
“The Jamar Clark family has urged us to start thinking about an exit strategy, and I think that would be wise”. “The shooting of five black men at a protest focused on racial equity should be investigated as a hate crime”.
Steven Belton, interim president of the Minneapolis Urban League, agreed, saying protesters had achieved most of what they wanted.
Clark was shot November 15 after a struggle with police.
William Champion says he’s already pushed that shooting aside.
The family of a black man who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police are preparing to lay him to rest.
A picture of a smiling Jamar Clark adorned the program for his funeral at Shiloh Temple International Ministries. Policemen must do 10 hours of community policing annually, serving dinner at local church functions or holding “Coffee with a Policeman” sessions. Both are open to the public. Some community members who say they saw the confrontation allege Clark was handcuffed when he was shot, which police have disputed.
A federal civil rights probe will examine the circumstances that led to Jamar Clark’s death.
