5 teens wounded in New York City playground shooting
The incident happened around 5 p.m. Monday at the Henry Maze playground on Avenue D near East 56th Street in East Flatbush.
Police have arrested a suspect wanted for a crime that NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton called “the height of insanity” Tuesday – the shooting of five teens over a backpack in Brooklyn.
When no one confessed to stealing the MCM bag, which cost more than $500 each, one man left the scene and returned with several friends, one of whom opened fire on the teenagers, PIX11 reports.
Police say the teens were at the playground in East Flatbush when an unknown person approached them and started shooting.
Two 17-year-olds were grazed in the torso, two 16-year-olds were struck in the right leg and cheek respectively and a 15-year-old was shot in the hand.
Police have closed the park while they investigate the shooting.
“Five kids in the middle of New York City get shot over a damn backpack”, he said.
A weapon has not been recovered at this time. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
