Waller’s 38-yard run off left tackle gave Fresno State its first lead of the game, 29-28, and Anderson then hit tight end Chad Olsen with a 2-point conversion. While comparing defenses, the UNLV Rebels own the league’s No. 86 rank in terms of road run defense, allowing 219.5 yards per game. Over under has seen the UNLV Rebels go a 2-2 so far, while the Fresno State Bulldogs go 3-1. The coaching staff tried to mask his weaknesses against Fresno State with a game plan that minimized Palandech’s role in the outcome as much as possible-the Rebels ran the ball 48 times, and Palandech was only asked to throw short passes on the perimeter, mixed with the occasional deep ball-but it’s hard to sustain offense when the play calling is so predictable. UNLV was caught out of position on the edges too often, allowing Anderson to cut upfield decisively for big gains-which is exactly how he scored on an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to bring Fresno within 28-23.
UNLV (2-4) and Fresno State (1-5) may not have gotten the results they had hoped for to start the season both each will be wanting to show conference supremacy. The Rebels failed to convert and the Bulldogs took over to kneel out the game.
It doesn’t take a brilliant football mind to deduce the problem-Palandech just isn’t good enough (at this point in his career, anyway) to lead the Rebels to victories.
The Rebels, despite being outgained 202-146 in the first half, rallied to tie it 14-14 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Palandech to sophomore wide receiver Kendal Keys just 42 seconds before halftime.
Fresno State overcame two missed field goals, a fumble, an interception, and a 28-14 third-quarter deficit.
