5 top categories with likely conquerors at Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016
The nominations of “Beasts of No Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton”, which both feature black male casts, came at a time when Hollywood movies have been criticized for lack of racial diversity. Yet, individual nominations, especially for movies, remained largely white – only adding to concerns this will be yet another monochromatic awards season.

Trumbo, a biopic about a blacklisted 1940s Hollywood screenwriter, led the Screen Actors Guild nominations on Wednesday in a diverse field that hinted at likely Oscar contenders but snubbed two presumed front-runners, Matt Damon’s space adventure The Martian and Jennifer Lawrence’s drama Joy.

While Straight Outta Compton was a box office and critical hit, its award season prospects were unknown. On Monday, the African-American Film Critics Association named the N.W.A drama their best of the year, but it’s been mostly overlooked by other critics’ awards. The film, which is mostly seeing praise for Lawrence’s performance, didn’t get nominated at all. Nominees are selected by separate movie and TV nominating panels, each comprised of more than 2,000 randomly selected SAG members, and the organization’s choices highlighted a few underdog performances.
Cate Blanchett was nominated for her lead role in “Carol”, but will have to fight off firm competition from “Women in Gold” star, Dame Helen Mirren.
Trumbo expects best-cast awards, with Bryan Cranston as best actor and Helen Mirren as best supporting actress.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Eddie Redmayne will go head-to-head as they battle it out, alongside “Black Mass” star Johnny Depp.

Awards season is just around the corner, and the first big nominations on the road to Oscar glory are out today in the form of SAG Awards nominations.
British period drama “Downton Abbey, ‘ political thriller “House of Cards” and advertising drama ‘Mad Men” were also nominated for best drama ensemble cast. With work in both movies and television, Netflix scored particularly well, earning a leading 8 nominations.
Winners will be announced when the SAG Awards air on Saturday, January 30, 2016.
