50 injured as protesters torch DM’s office in Kashmir
Police fired tear gas and shotgun pellets to quell thousands of protesters who attacked a government office. “Almost all the people shifted to Srinagar sustained eye injuries due to pellet”, a health official said.
Following the calendar issued by the unified resistance leadership, people held “Azaadi” conventions across Kashmir on Monday – 59 consecutive day of mass anti-establishment uprising in Kashmir.
Condemning arrest spree of youth and children, GN Zaki said such suppressive tactics will not bring the government of India its desired results.
Clashes were also reported in Tral area of Pulwama district where more than 60 people were hurt when the security forces took action against the stone pelters. “As Mehbooba was making her way back to the helicopter, some people hurled stones at her cavalcade”, media reports said.
The incident came on a day an all-party delegation began its visit to the state crippled by unrest for almost the last two months since the killing of terrorist Burhan Wani. He added that over 100 people were injured.
The protesters also set afire the mini-secretariat building, housing the deputy commissioner’s office in the area, the official said.
10 incidents of stone pelting were reported from Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Awantipora and Sopore, he said. Several people have reportedly been injured in the clashes. Most Kashmiris want an end to Indian rule and favor independence or a merger with Pakistan. Killing of Danish Sultan at Palpora Srinagar, injuring about 300 people and arresting more than 2,000 speak volumes of foolproof arrangements made for the visit of Indian delegation coming for assessing the situation, as if they are from a planet where the cries of Kashmiris do not reach.
Indian-administered Kashmir is predominantly populated by Muslims and there is a strong independence movement in the area aligned with Pakistan that seeks independence of the territory from India. “The police are cautiously handling the situation”, said the spokesman. The participants of the rally were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
