5M Vehicles Recalled For Defective Continental Air Bags
The recall of Continental airbags comes on the heels of the massive Takata airbag recalls that have expanded to almost 34 million vehicles in the USA alone and has led to the company being fined with a $200-million civil penalty.
The latest Honda recall consists of the 2005-2012 Acura RL, the 2007-2011 Honda CR-V and 2007-2016 Acura RDX. However, replacement parts won’t be available until fall 2016. We anticipate that owners of the affected models will be able to confirm their vehicles’ recall status on these sites beginning on February 15, 2016.
About 341,000 Honda Accords in the USA are recalled because of airbags manufactured by Continental Automotive Systems. Honda will not have enough parts for replacement for all vehicles until autumn.
The widely publicised Takata airbag recall is set to widen with Continental Automotive Systems (CAS) today revealing that one of its airbag control units may be defective. Such a buildup can cause the inflators to rupture during deployment in an accident, spraying sharp particles toward the vehicle occupants.
Honda has now issued another recall to recall back models that was fitted with the problematic Takata airbag. Drivers with an activated supplemental restraint system light should visit a dealer for a fix from the limited number of parts on hand, the company said.
Its latest action indicates the continuing Takata recalls may not be over.
Airbag maker Takata has recalled millions of airbags because of moisture that can alter the explosive airbag chemical and cause the airbags to explode.
That came after NHTSA in November a year ago imposed a US$70 million penalty on Takata, a fine that could increase to US$130 million if Takata does not meet terms of an agreement with the agency.
