6 militants involved in Pathankot attack killed, yet to be identified
Security officials suspect the gunmen – five of whom were killed – belonged to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group that staged a 2001 attack on the Indian parliament which brought the two countries to the brink of war. The reports reveal that the terrorists came in a jeep that was a day earlier snatched after thrashing out a Superintendent of Police and his two associates on the night of 31st December, 2015.
As the attack continued, authorities in New Delhi also ramped up security.
“Pakistan must cooperate in nabbing the planners if they’re proven to be in Pakistan”, Islamabad-based Marvi Sirmed wrote in The Nation newspaper.
Addressing reporters at the Pathankot air base near the border with Pakistan, Parrikar said Indian security forces “have done an excellent job containing these highly motivated terrorists”.
“Any diminution in tensions with India might risk the army ” s lock on its control of Pakistan ” s national security policy”.
“Through timely and prompt action by all agencies, the likely plan of the terrorists to destroy valuable assets of the Air Force has been foiled”, the Indian Defense Ministry had said in a statement at the time. “Therefore, I am not fixing any deadline to the case, but we will try to complete the probe soon”, Mr Kumar said.
The counter offensive against the terrorists at Punjab’s Pathankot air base has been going on for the past 77 hours.
Modi’s visit to its neighbour was the first by an Indian leader in more than a decade. Contrary to it Indian media and opposition parties did not endorse Prime Minister Modi’s steps towards improving relations with nuclear Pakistan.
The United Jehad Council said that by accusing Pakistan of every attack, India neither succeeded in maligning the Kashmir freedom struggle nor would it gain anything in the future.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training insurgents in its portion of Kashmir. India should also pay attention to train its security forces’ elements since they took too long to in cleaning up the base that is still under its way of consolidation.
On a question regarding the stretch of operation, the minister replied that there were foreigners and civilians in the area that is why it took three days.
