6 shot, 1 fatally, after peace rally in Alabama
A gunbattle between two people was what led to the fatal shooting of one bystander and the wounding of five others following a peace rally at a public housing community, police said Monday.
The shootings took place about an after a “Stop the Violence Gate City Peace Day” event ended in the community’s Lewis Park, police said.
On Sunday around 8:30 p.m., deputies were called to the corner of Georgia Road and Joppa Avenue on multiple people shot.
Numerous residents were still outside following the event, officials say. Once the gunfire started, people began to scatter. The five surviving victims were not wounded critically, he said.
He told the news website: “I ran and tried to grab all the kids and get them inside”.
The victim, Story’s friend, was reportedly hit on the upper left side and fell face down. “He had a pulse and we were fanning him and telling him, “they’re coming, they’re coming”, he said.
“I’m just shook up right now”, Mr Story added.
The other victims were spread out across the block when they were struck.
Another resident described the shooting as “the scariest thing ever in my life”.
