7 killed in MI parking lot shootings; suspect arrested

Investigators planned to release additional information on the shootings at a news conference scheduled for 7 a.m. Sunday, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. Hadley says Sunday morning the teen remained in serious condition.

Police have revised the death count in a series of random shootings in western MI that have left at least six people dead.

“For as terrible as this is we are right now in as good a place as we can be”, Getting said, lauding the work of police agencies across Kalamazoo County in finding and arresting the suspect less than seven hours after the first shots were fired.

A 45-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in downtown Kalamazoo following a massive manhunt after the shootings began early Saturday evening, authorities said. The New York Daily News writes the gunman later opened fire on people sitting in their vehicles in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Authorities didn’t respond to the next shooting until around 10 p.m. Getting said four women died and a 14-year-old girl was “severely injured” at a Cracker Barrel restaurant off Interstate 94.

Jason Dalton has yet to be charged in connection with the MI shootings, and police revealed that he lacked a criminal history prior to the shootings.

Matyas said three people were shot at the dealership; a father and son died from their injuries.

Matyas said authorities did not believe the shootings were targeted at specific people, describing them as “our worst case scenario”.

Police have identified the suspect they believe is responsible for a series of random shootings in western MI that have left at least six people dead.

Getting said the shootings appear to be premeditated, but that the victims were thought to have been chosen at random.

“This is every community’s nightmare – when you have someone going around just randomly killing people, no rhyme, no reason”, he said.

The investigation began around 5:45 p.m. Saturday at the Meadows Townhomes parking lot in Richland Township, where police said a woman was shot several times.

Police are looking for the suspect.

USA media outlets are reporting four people were killed at a restaurant, while two were killed at a vehicle dealership.
