76ers suspend center Jahlil Okafor for 2 games after fight
The Sixers have chose to suspend Okafor for two games, effective immediately, due to his recent actions.
In the video, first released by TMZ Sports, Okafor can be seen yelling at another man on the street while someone holds him back.
Okafor is averaging 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Sixers, who beat the Lakers 103-91 on Tuesday for the first win of the 2015-16 season.
Okafor will miss Wednesday’s game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks and Saturday night’s home game against the Denver Nuggets.
The Boston Police Department is now investigating the extremely publicized fight after a police report was filed, and the Sixers plan to handle the situation “internally” after they complete their own investigation. He said he told 76ers coach Brett Brown about what happened during the team’s plane ride to Houston. The initial video of the incident was posted last Thursday. And the thing I do say is that when I spent time with Jahlil in his room today, he’s ashamed, he’s embarrassed.
Okafor’s handlers made the request for the close-in security from Philadelphia management for their prized investment out of Duke.
Again, Woj may not have revealed the reason for the two-game suspension, but it’s clear that the 76ers want to let Okafor know that they won’t tolerate this, regardless of the fact that he’s not quite 20 years old yet.
On Friday Philadelphia’s Fox affiliate reported that Okafor was pulled over for speeding 108 miles per hour across the Ben Franklin Bridge, 63 miles per hour faster than the speed limit.
“This is not something that we dismiss”, Brown said.
“We will support him”. I think the guy was just talking shit.
Okafor very clearly has no interest in playing for the 76ers, and he is getting himself in trouble due to it. Were the team.500, there wouldn’t be almost as many hecklers, and those hecklers might possibly be starting these incidents which are leaving a black eye on Okafor’s very good rookie season. The 19-year-old is as far removed from a winning culture as there is in the pros at the moment, tasked to be a catalyst for drastic change in Philly. Okafor later essentially admitted that it was him and that he was defending a teammate. “I worry from an adult standpoint for him to help him navigate through this National Basketball Association lifestyle”.
