8 in College Football Playoff rankings
“The committee’s charge is to rank the top 25 teams in the nation; this is done based on the independent rankings of the 12 college football experts in the room”, Hancock said. As of now, anyway.
Ohio State jumped from No. 5 to No. 2, the biggest change in the selection committee’s latest rankings, announced Tuesday night.
Louisville (9-1) trails No. 1 Alabama (10-0), No. 2 Ohio State (9-1), No. 3 MI (9-1) and No. 4 Clemson (9-1). 2, 3 and 4 teams in the AP Top 25 all lost on the same weekend.
Games remaining: Saturday at Wake Forest (6-4); November 26 vs. The Pac-12 and SEC lead with six teams in the rankings, followed by the Big Ten at four, and the ACC and Big 12 at three. MI looks to avenge last week’s road loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes by hosting the Indiana Hoosiers. Should no championship game end up happening, but the Buckeyes still wins out, they would maintain a very good chance of making this year’s playoff. Wisconsin (8-2) and Penn State (8-2) could be two-loss champions.
Hocuff said MI stayed in the No. 3 spot, because of its wins against Colorado, which moved into the top 10, plus Penn State (8-2) and Wisconsin (8-2). Clemson 9-1 1304 3 6. The Buckeyes replace Washington in the top four after the Huskies lost to USC and fell to sixth.
Texas A&M took the biggest beating of the week, falling 17 spots to No. 25 after losing its second straight game to a team from the state of Mississippi.
And that brings us to this week’s opponent: Colorado, who checks in at No. 10 ahead of a ranked showdown in Boulder.
Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Arkansas are projected to fall out of the top 25. I’d say that’s Oklahoma. “They’ve continued to bounce back from two early- season losses. The committee believes that Oklahoma is deserving of that 9 spot, and still looking at West Virginia to get a quality win”.
The only other remaining unbeaten besides Alabama is No. 14 Western Michigan (10-0). Florida State Seminoles (7-3) 18. The big dogs – unless your home turf resides in Tuscaloosa – weren’t safe last week and now we’re left to pick up the pieces.
Western Michigan beat Eastern Michigan, 45-31, on October 22. Clemson returned to the top tier, and is now in No. 4.
Strength of schedule was cast aside in the Washington vs Wisconsin debate for No. 6. 7 and 8, respectively.
Speaking of the Pac 12, if their season ended today, Colorado would be playing in their conference championship game versus Washington State. Oklahoma State 12. Utah 13.
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher spent his rare free Saturday monitoring the bedlam that enveloped college football and came away with an interesting conclusion. The loss is even more significant for MI because now Penn State has an inside track to a conference title.
