8-year-old boy charged with murder after death of 1-year-old

An 8-year-old child has been charged with the murder of a 1-year-old child, Birmingham police said.

The boy is accused of killing 1-year-old Kelcia Lewis while their mother, Katerra Lewis, 26, was at a club on October 11, according to ABC 33/40.

While the two women were gone, the 8-year-old boy allegedly attacked the one year old because the baby wouldn’t stop crying. The baby suffered head trauma and internal organ damage, which lead to her death.

Lewis is charged with manslaughter and has been released from the Jefferson County Jail on $15,000 bond.

Paramedics were called to the scene and took the baby girl to Children’s of Alabama Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Katerra Lewis is charged with manslaughter.

According to our news partners AL.com, police believe the 8-year-old put the injured Kelci back in her crib, where she remained until her mother found her the following day.

“Apparently, the mother of the one year old left the house going to the nightclub with her friend who is also the homeowner”.

Edwards said Katerra Lewis has been cooperative, and he thinks the reality of her choice on that night is starting to set in.

Her grandmother, Waynetta Callens, said Kelcia Lewis had fought through so much to have her life taken away so soon. They lit candles and released white balloons in Kelci’s memory.

The fate of the boy, who remains in the custody of the Department of Human Resources, now goes to family court, where authorities will decide how to proceed with such an unprecedented case, Edwards told reporters.

Edwards said they believe the 8-year-old caused all of the bruises that were seen on Kelci Lewis’ body, and that the coroner’s report shows the toddler was beaten. She insists that there was another adult in the home with the children.

“She grew up to this little bitty precious angel and now this”, Callens said. “Never judge a book by its cover, which means don’t try to judge from the outside”. “If you don’t know the real story, keep your mouth closed because you don’t know what happened”. “We know the truth, and we got nothing to hide”.
