89th Oscars award ceremony ends in “surprise”
Naturally, the task of filling in gossipy details falls to TMZ, which has a story that adds some juicy wrinkles to the interaction between Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as they attempted to present the Best Picture award.
There was “pandemonium” and bruised egos at the Oscars when the wrong film was announced Best Picture victor, and Windsor’s Vincent Georgie was there to witness it.
In the picture, exclusively obtained by Page Six, a wincing Beatty is seen holding up his hands trying to explain how the disaster unfolded. Emma Stone won the Best Actress Award for “La La Land”.
“Then they kind of showed us the best picture envelope, and it said Moonlight, and that’s when I sort of jumped to the mic and made sure everybody knew what was going on”.
“I don’t know what just happened”, Kimmel said, as he exited the stage. That show came in just shy of 32 million viewers after a 20.8 overnight rating.
“LA La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz realized the mistake after being approached onstage by Academy security at the end of the Sunday night broadcast from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
And The White Helmets, a Netflix film about the rescuers who risk their lives to save civilians caught in Syria’s civil war, won the Oscar for best documentary short.
Price Waterhouse Coopers apologized twice for Sunday night’s best picture award debacle as the president of the Academy revealed how she reacted to the mix-up.
Best foreign language film will be keenly watched as a contest between two offbeat comedies: Germany’s Toni Erdmann – the critics’ choice – and Sweden’s A Man Called Ove.
The exchange was a gracious encapsulation of a monthslong Best Picture contest that assumed complex layers amid Donald Trump’s election. Obviously, Harvey was a running theme on Twitter. “Moonlight” earned the award, not “La La Land”.
Three out of four acting categories had at least one African-American nominee, and Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis won the Best Supporting Actor and Actress. In fact, I did much better than many other. The film’s director, Chazelle, is the youngest best director victor at just 32 years old. “That’s why I took such a long look at Faye, and at you [the audience], I wasn’t trying to be amusing”. Kimmel didn’t stray entirely from politics. “I think there’s a very superficial read of “La La Land’ that does injustice to what Damien’s doing in the film, and it’s convenient because these are tough times to make a superficial read of that film”.
Kimmel also showed a willingness to tweak the motion picture academy for its own shortcomings, drawing a sly parallel between the criticism both the president and the Oscars have taken for a perceived lack of racial sensitivity.
