90-year-old woman opts for epic road trip over cancer treatment
“I’m 90 years old, I’m hitting the road” was Norma’s short but powerful statement, as quoted by ABC News.
Just two days after her husband’s death, Norma discovered she had a tumour on her uterus.
As WPIX reports, Norma skipped treatment to travel the country with her son Tim and daughter-in-law, Ramie.
A 90-year-old woman from MI made a decision to turn her cancer diagnosis into an excuse to travel across the United States. After Norma’s husband passed away, it was hard for her to live alone. Their first stop was Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota and since their start, the group has visited various USA states, including Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Florida, Arizona, and New Mexico.
“As doctors, we see what cancer treatment looks like every day”, he said. The team ran in the Disney World and watched whale together.
Though her mobility is not like it used to be, she even took a ride in a hot-air balloon.
Since August a year ago she’s been touring in a recreational vehicle driven by her son, Tim. Her daughter-in-law is sharing in the fun. “She’s getting healthier, I think, from eating well and being outside a lot”, Ramie added.
“We see a spark in her eye that we haven’t seen in a very long time. She’s with her loved ones and that’s really important”.
“Having some blood detected in her urine during a routine exam, she was sent for an ultrasound, then another”, reads the Driving Miss Norma Facebook page. Now, a Facebook page documenting Norma’s journey has over 66,000 followers and is helping to highlight the importance of discussing end-of-life plans.
“Everyone has different ideas about how they want the end of their life to work”.
Right now, Tim, Ramie, Norma, and their dog Ringo are still enjoying all that Florida has to offer.
