911 calls: ‘Gunshots going like crazy’ in Pulse nightclub
“So I don’t know if they’re in a bathroom with her right now, or if they’re just in the club.” reported one man who was texting with his girlfriend inside Pulse.
“There’s like 18 people, two are dead, they’re in the bathroom”, he said.
One neighbor near Pulse told 911 operators people were banging on his door to escape the shooting and others were seeking cover behind parked cars.
The report was one of numerous 911 calls from the Pulse nightclub shooting in June released by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. His friend has been shot three times, the caller says. “How many shots did you hear?”, the operator asks.
“Gun shots were just like insane”, one caller outside the club told 911 operators, according to partial transcripts of the calls that were released on Tuesday.
“It’s OK, she might be with the deputies or she might be just trying not to let the light come out”, the dispatcher said. Mateen, who died in a shootout with police hours later, also wounded 53 people, as the club was crowded with revelers. “I’m gonna stay on the phone with you”. “He got shot and nobody’s going in for him!” another pleads.
Mateen was “saying that he is a terrorist and has several bombs strapped to him in the downstairs female restroom”, according to a log of the department’s calls released in June.
So far, none of the calls from inside the club have been released. A dozen news media companies including The Associated Press are suing for access to these public records as well as the communications between gunman Omar Mateen and the Orlando Police Department, during which authorities say Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
