Obama snapped a photo of Denali from Air Force One and posted it on Instagram shortly before meeting with a group of native leaders on the ground.
We have a suggestion: If, in another 100 years or so, Ohio and Alaska are still feuding over the name of the mountain, the dispute should be settled by having each congressional delegation climb to the top of it. Whoever gets there first gets to choose the name.
Speaker of the House John Boehner, a West Chester Republican, joined the chorus of dismay, saying he was “deeply disappointed” by the president’s action.
Frantz’s children are all named for mountains, including his 17-year-old son, McKinley.
Lawmakers from former President McKinley’s home state of Ohio have blasted the decision. The name was then formally recognized.
President Obama arrived in Alaska on Monday afternoon and spoke of renewed commitment to mitigating the potentially catastrophic effects of climate change, the Associated Press reported. They’ve received less attention than others amid Obama’s recent efforts to improve conditions for Native Americans.
