On Wednesday’s episode, host Stephen Colbert admitted that production problems nearly prevented his debut show from even making it to air.
According to a CBS News report, that is a 206 percent increase over the same night in 2015, when The Late Show featured long-time host David Letterman at the helm.
The company began advertising on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” this week with a campaign created to brand GE as a “digital industrial” company. Among total viewers, Late Show slid almost 3 million from Tuesday to 3.66 million.
The other big highlights: Colbert asked second guest Elon Musk whether he’s trying to improve the world or if he’s actually a supervillain. In adults 18-49, “Tonight Show” rebounded solidly with a 1.2 rating, compared to a 0.8 for “Late Show“. Given that Trump doesn’t have a history of responding well to criticism and Colbert dedicated a segment of his inaugural episode to ridiculous Trump storylines (and an Oreo binge), it’s fair to say that things could get uncomfortable. “At 11:20, and again this actually happened, no one in the building could give me a guarantee for certain the show would go on the air last night, so you could imagine how exciting that was for all of us”, he said. And while Colbert has been on TV for years, some of you are just now getting to know him.

It went over like most pilot’s do, slightly soft and safe, still finding its footing, but then came the interview with George Clooney. “And we had to cut some stuff we loved”, Colbert told his audience.
