Tomsula: I won’t pick Hayne as a specialist returner
Jarryd Hayne may have to sit and wait for his National Football League debut with San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula intimating he will not play in Tuesday’s (AEST) National Football League opener against Minnesota.
AllNFL teams thrive on deception, and that’s what all of Thursday’s talkcould be.Rather than announce who their return specialist will be, Tomsula and McGaughey called into question whether Hayne should suit up at all.
They repeatedly pointed to how Hayne was a rookie and was still learning the game.
“I guess that s why I temper all this speculation, because I don t want to take anything away from what the man has achieve”, Tomsula said. However, his vision needs developing and at this stage, the 49ers are probably more comfortable with Reggie Bush as a back up runner, receiver, and returner.
At the moment, his head coach, Jim Tomsula, won’t say.
During Thursday’s practice, Hayne wore No. 44 instead of his usual No. 38, signaling that he was playing the role of Vikings backup running back Matt Asiata on the 49ers’ scout team. “You ve got that aspect”, Tomsula said.
The former rugby star’s immediate impact will likely be on special teams. Tomsula asked at his weekly press conference.
“In that situation right there, for Jarryd in the preseason, that s something that we wanted to see, him to be able to field the ball naturally and kind of make that kind of play”, McGaughey said.
New Zealand running-back Paul Lasike has also had a roller-coaster ride in the pre-season, scoring a touchdown for the Arizona Cardinals, getting cut and then signed to the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. This is real bullets flying.
The 49ers released a depth chart Wednesday ahead of their season-opening game against the Vikings next Monday night, and while the majority of positions have been settled, there are still battles to be won over the next few days.
“And that first year for all rookie players is, that’s the line that you balance there”.
Everybody is flying the Hayne Plane right now, but if you look at who led our team in punt returns in the preseason, it wasn t Jarryd Hayne. With the schematic we re installing, how are you practicing within that scheme, the things we re doing this week, do they fit your skillset? “But we ve also got to stay on the development side”.
“Obviously Jarryd has got the body position, the balance, the leverage points, it’s proven he has those”.
“But now how to use them?” They delayed his entry into group drills, the place he ultimately confirmed his prowess as a receiving menace on swing routes and display passes.
