Carnival Cruise Fire: No Injuries Reported “Watch”
According to a statement issued Tuesday by Carnival, the ship – which had left San Juan on Sunday for St. Thomas, its first stop on a seven-day cruise – will not continue its itinerary once it is released to leave.
Carnival said the Liberty had 1,150 crew members on board. No guests or crew were injured. But when they reached St. Thomas on Monday, an engine fire forced the Liberty to stay docked. Staff distributed water and snacks in the port. Carnival said it now expects the Liberty to sail back to San Juan later this week. “What is important is that nobody died or got hurt in the fire”.
Carnival Cruise Lines said it provided free shuttle service to destinations on St. Thomas and gave passengers a $150 shipboard credit. But Carnival still pampered its guests – they were sent to hotels nearby, treated to movies and a buffet, and then were able to return for the night.
Carnival said it has not been determined when the ship will depart from St. Thomas. The cruise company was still trying to figure out what happened exactly while making arrangements to fly everyone home.
The cause of the engine fire is under investigation. In addition, everyone is getting a full refund and a 50 percent discount on their next sailing. There aren’t many commercial flights on the island, so chartered aircraft is stepping up to the job.
