Illawarra Lifeline boss says reach out to those in distress
A somber but hopeful ceremony was held Thursday evening to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. September 10, at 8 p.m. everyone is encouraged to light a candle in their window and leave it burning throughout the night to show your support of suicide prevention, to remember a loved one and to remember the survivors of suicide.
Accordingly, Professor Vikram Patel-of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine-reminds, “Suicide kills almost as many men aged 15-29 as transportation accidents and almost as many young women as complications from pregnancy and childbirth”.

Pat McGovern, the suicide prevention coordinator for the Iowa Department of Public Health, says it starts with trying to reduce the stigma of mental illness and reaching out to those who may be in trouble.
“Everyone in the world should be aware that suicide is an issue”, said Jessica Kalathas, suicide prevention coordinator for Crisis Services of North Alabama.

Of the approximately 4,000 Canadians who die every year as a result of suicide, many were confronting a mental health problem or illness.
The online survey was presented by the three mental health and suicide prevention groups in August. The Movember Foundation is using this occasion to spark conversation about the high numbers of male suicide within the community.

Lippman said friends are also nervous to ask if they think someone is suicidal, but as uncomfortable as the conver-sation might be, they should talk to them.
