12-year-old homicide suspect soon could return to Omaha
A 12-year-old Nebraska boy is wanted for murder in a gang-related shooting that left one dead and injured another in Omaha, police said.
Jarrell Milton, 12, is the third of three murder suspects to be arrested in connection to the death of Jamymell Ray, 31. Flyers are circulating in hopes of locating the young preteen, while others debate on whether or not this child bears adult responsibility for his alleged actions. The boys allegedly arrived with guns and at least two are suspected of opening fire.
The other two suspects, ages 15 and 17, were arrested last week.
Don Kleine, Douglas County Attorney, said the 12-year-old would be charged in juvenile court. Prosecutor stated that Ray was shot when the two teens and the boy enticed him to the area on the location of a marijuana deal. Todd Schmaderer, the Police Chief of Omaha, said kids are increasingly getting involved in violence. The children’s father, 37-year-old Javaris Milton, is now serving a 30-year prison sentence in Minnesota for a 2010 murder. He will be extradited to Omaha, where he faces a first-degree murder charge.
The other man, 30-year-old Charles Fisher, was wounded, and authorities say the 17-year-old is suspected of shooting him at close range. Ray died from his injuries while Fisher was treated and released from the hospital. Police say the three young people had gang ties, although the victim did not. “It’s hard to intervene as a law enforcement agency when somebody is that young”. “They are barely at the age for intervention”.
“[Social media] has allowed them to learn about how to become a good gang member”, said Bruce Ferrell, a ex- gang unit officer in Omaha, in an interview with NBC News. “All of it’s even impossible to imagine that it’s even a possibility”.
The attorney’s office has said it intends to charge all three boys as adults, although it is unclear under the state’s new law if the case against the 12-year-old can proceed in adult court, WOWT notes.
