Judge Denies Suge Knight Request To Dismiss Murder Charges
Today, July 7, Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Marcus rejected that as a good reason to dismiss the case. But at the time of the hearing, Sloan said he wouldn’t be a “snitch” and be responsible for putting the rap mogul behind bars, so he claimed he didn’t remember much from the evening. He said Sloan’s refusal to identify Knight had been a case of a “recanting witness” – common in cases involving gang members or those who have previously had gang affiliations, in which witnesses are either fearful of retaliation or simply abiding by an informal code forbidding co-operation with police.
But attorneys read from a transcript of his interview with detectives shortly after he was struck and Barnes later played the recording for the court. But an attorney representing Carter’s family said that the slain man did not attack his friend Knight, and Knight should have just driven off rather than hit Carter and Sloane with his auto.
Knight is now being held on $10 million bail. Outside court, Mesereau declined to tell reporters what amount of bail he would be requesting.
Knight’s newly hired lawyer, Tom Mesereau, who successfully defended the late pop star Michael Jackson against child molestation charges a decade ago, told Judge Marcus on Tuesday, “It’s an outrage that anybody would be charged with homicide in case like this”.
In addition, according to The Los Angeles Times, Mesereau said that his client was acting in self-defense. The judge responded that he was.
Suge Knight’s attempt to get a murder charge against him dismissed has failed.
Knight has experienced a series of medical issues since being arrested in January. He was hospitalized on at least three different occasions following court hearings.
A judge on Tuesday also set a preliminary hearing for September 17 in an unrelated robbery case filed after a celebrity photographer accused Knight and comedian Katt Williams of stealing her camera previous year.
