49ers coach making sure ‘Hayne Plane’ stays close to ground
The San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula has been secretive regarding where, or even if, Jarryd Hayne will play against the Minnesota Vikings at the SF 49ers’ home stadium in Santa Clara.
Opinion remains divided among National Football League pundits on whether or not Hayne will play but most seem to be optimistic that he has at least a solid chance of making the 46-man game-day roster. That’s why I temper all this speculation because I don’t want to take anything away from what the man has achieved. In Hayne’s case that would include playing as part of the coverage unit on special teams and potentially filling time at running back.
Hayne chose the 49ers over the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. “You ve got that aspect”, Tomsula said.
Don’t be surprised if Australian rugby sensation Jarryd Hayne is not active for the 49ers’ opener Monday night against Minnesota.
While Hayne had earned his spot on the team’s 53-man squad, the coaches repeatedly pointed to him being a rookie who still had a lot to earn.
Jarryd Hayne’s position in the 49ers gameday squad won’t be confirmed until Tuesday.
“OK you can catch a punt, but can you do other things?” Tomsula asked. Tomsula, meanwhile, wasn’t going to tip his hand on whether Hayne would serve as the return specialist, all while offering up reasons Hayne might sit.
“Everybody is flying the Hayne Plane right now, but if you look at who led our team in punt returns in the pre-season, it wasn’t Jarryd Hayne“.
“And that first year for all rookie players is, that’s the line that you balance there”. “But we’ve also got to stay on the development side of it. There has to be those techniques, those fundamentals, the developing that has to stay on course, has to stay on point”.
“Obviously Jarryd has the body position, balance and leverage positions. When to use them”. And working on blocking, pass protections. “I think everyone kind of saw (in practices) the effects he can have on a defense and the things he opens up for us as an offense when’s he’s on the field”.
Brisbane defensive tackle Jesse Williams was hoping to finally play a regular season game for the Seattle Seahawks after two years on the sidelines overcoming knee injuries. So we’ve got to kind of keep everything in perspective and understand the preseason is the preseason and right now is right now. This is real bullets…
