Nvidia hands out software updates for all Shield devices
Nvidia’s sure having a rough summer as it attempts to branch out beyond butt-kicking graphics cards.
However, while Tim Cook bragged that Apple TV would have the most of the main features of any now available TV box covered while also providing a vast variety of channels to choose from, NVIDIA has stated on their blog that their SHIELD Android TV box has a few more, as do a few other Android based boxes, while SHIELD is the only product to support 4K video content and HDMI 2.0 technology.
Fortunately, the issue with the Shield Pro isn’t almost as far-reaching as the tablet’s hot hot battery. The hard drive issues won’t make the device catch fire so at least owners don’t have to worry about that, and it merits mentioning here that the issue isn’t exactly widespread. According to NVIDIA, less than 1% of those units are prone to hard drive failures. If you see a fastboot menu appear after installing the Shield TV’s Upgrade 1.4, you’ll want to replace your console, even if it starts functioning correctly again after a reboot. The problem also shows up as severe and persistent pixelation in all tiles on the top row of the Android TV homescreen.
That’s because Nvidia officially confirmed that all faulty Nvidia Shield Pro units will be replaced in an urgent manner.
NVIDIA created a post on the official Shield page, where it asked the question: “NVIDIA SHIELD or the New Apple TV?”. But don’t let this minor hiccup turn you off on the Shield TV. The hard drive bug or rather hardware problem impacts only the 500 GB unit of the Nvidia Shield Pro, which in essence, is a TV box.
