San Francisco sheriff requested transfer of immigrant inmate

The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that immigration is a federal matter – so why, then, are certain cities allowed to get away with thumbing their noses at the law and declare themselves “sanctuaries”?

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has joined the growing list of high-profile personalities who have openly condemned San Francisco City’s “sanctuary” policy. A San Francisco murder has become a flashpoint in the debate over so-called sanctuary cities, those areas in the United States that draw a line between local law enforcement and the federal task of deporting undocumented immigrants. But San Francisco had a $5,000 bench warrant from 1995 on Lopez-Sanchez for a marijuana possession for sale case, and the sheriff’s department sought to take custody of him.

But she went on to add that if an immigrant is picked up for a traffic violation or misdemeanor – and has no criminal record – that is entirely different. Though sanctuary policies differ among cities, these include New York City, Houston and Chicago.

“The theft was immediately reported to the San Francisco Police Department”, she said.

The Obama administration also has had a long-term policy of making those who re-enter the country after they’ve been deported under order a priority for deportation and prosecution, regardless of whether they’ve committed any other crime.

Murder suspect Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a 45-year-old undocumented man, had been repeatedly deported to Mexico, but returned to the USA, and served time in a USA prison and was released, according to reports.

The USA Bureau of Land Management is investigating whether one of its agent’s guns was used in the shooting death of a woman walking on a popular San Francisco pier.

In a jailhouse interview with ABC7, Lopez-Sanchez said he found the gun wrapped in a T-shirt on a bench and he accidentally shot Steinle. It was not too long ago when the president of the National Council of La Raza – to whom Clinton will speak next week – called Obama the “deporter in chief”.
