‘Truth’ Clip with Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford
Rather than disputing the whole story, the Republicans and rival news organizations quickly discredited the memo – which CBS only possessed a faxed copy of, several generations from the original – establishing that it had been written with a word-processing program rather than on a 1968-era typewriter.
“Truth” isn’t flashily shot, and doesn’t have any technical tricks up its sleeve – instead it wants Mapes’ dedication to shake the power structure that buried the real story of Bush’s military service to be the film’s fireworks, and a wake-up call to the nation.
Cate Blanchett is outstanding as Mapes. Of course people will say I found it emotional because it’s about me. They failed to authenticate of key piece of evidence against Bush: an incriminating memo that CBS attributed to Bush’s by-then-deceased commanding officer, which was turned over to Mapes by a source (Stacy Keach) who insisted on anonymity. He said he’s since “spent a lot of time practicing humility … and tremendous gratitude”.
Writer James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac“), who is also making his impressive debut as a director on “Truth, ” suggests that CBS ordered an independent investigation conducted by a Republican-leaning law firm of what happened to help its parent company, Viacom, seek political favors from the Bush administration. “My hope for the movie is that it doesn’t finish a chapter, that it opens a brand new chapter”, Quite stated, “about how we journalists, and subsequently the shoppers of stories, can get high quality journalism with integrity within the new digital age”. Even early on, documents are hard to verify, and the paper trail seems thin, and while some questions are raised, Mapes presses on with the great conviction. Dan Rather poses for photographs during a premiere of “Truth” on day 3 of the Toronto worldwide Film Festival, Saturday, September 12, 2015, in Toronto.
In one chilling sequence, Mapes is seen browsing conservative websites online, with trolls branding her a “feminazi” and “ugly”, and one anonymous poster writing, “I’m picturing Sean Hannity sharpening his knife to gut this witch”. “The story was true”.
By any objective standard watching the film, Mapes’ story is far from rock solid. One witness who “confirms” the content of those documents does so over the phone, without actually seeing them for himself. Sony Pictures Classic is releasing Truth domestically.
