Jamie Murray trumps famous brother
Jamie Murray pipped his famous brother Andy to the post in being first to secure a place in a Wimbledon final this year – with David Beckham playing a starring role.
Britain’s Jamie Murray ensured at least one Murray brother will be in a final at Wimbledon by winning in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles.
“Hopefully on Saturday we can lift the trophy”. I think all the hard work we’ve put in is kind of paying off.
First-time pairing Erlich and Petzschner had made an impressive run to the last-four after originally coming through qualifying at Roehampton and they made the stronger start, immediately putting Murray’s serve under pressure. Petzschner was broken in the first game of the second set, and with no further breaks of serve, Peers served to clinch the second set 6-3 and level the match.
And at one point Beckham managed to upstage the players when he triggered applause for catching a tennis ball which had bounced off a line judge’s chair and into the Royal Box where he was watching the action with his mother Sandra.
With Erlich visibly struggling, he had his right knee bandaged up throughout the match, the fourth set was a much less competitive affair. He and Petzschner hung in till the tail-end of the third set when Murray and Peers broke for 5-4.
David applauded the doubles team as they were cheered off the court following their victory.
But when asked whether he was optimistic the Murray family could take home two titles, Jamie Murray said: “Well, he’s got to beat Federer and maybe Djokovic”.
Living in the sporting shadow of Andy Murray has been challenging at times for Jamie, who admits he has ” spent most of my life that way”.
