Wimbledon 2015: Serena Williams Beats Maria Sharapova, Will Play Garbine
At 2/5 with BoyleSports Serena Williams has to still make it past 7/1 shot Sharapova, but the American is the best player in the world, and should once more hoist the famous trophy come Saturday afternoon.
Azarenka was taking some fearful punishment but somehow survived a Williams onslaught in an 18-point game at 1-2, saving three break points to level at 2-2. Serena simply plays tennis much better than she does.
Serena Williams is back in the Wimbledon final, and still on target for a calendar-year Grand Slam.
If Maria Sharapova wanted to walk onto Centre Court Thursday and deliver a message to Serena Williams right off the bat, she did just that. At age 17, Sharapova beat Williams twice in 2004, including in the Wimbledon final and hasnt defeated her since.
By comparison, Sharapova is 120-39 all-time against the rest of the top 25 in her career. Pitching two successful women against each other in a negative light is something that we love to do to to successful women in a bid to keep them down. There is not a weirder duality in sport. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the final here”.
For now, the No. 1-seeded Williams is keeping her thoughts to herself, declaring she won’t entertain questions about those topics, even after easily dismissing No. 4 Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals at the All England Club on Thursday to close in on the milestones. That was Williams’ most lopsided loss in a Grand Slam.
With the Spaniard serving for the match at 5-3, 40-40 up in the third, Radwanska stopped the next point mid-rally after hearing cries of “out, out” from people in her players’ box who were convinced Muguruza’s backhand landed behind the baseline.
“At least I made it to a final of four”, Williams said.
The victor said of her upcoming opponent: “It’s great for Garbiñe. And I’m at a position where I don’t need to win another Wimbledon“, she smiled. She claimed six straight games to lead 1-0 by a break in the third.
“Of course, I would love to win easy matches; those are always the best wins”. It is. Believe it. It was just the start that the Russian glamour girl did not want. She never faced a break point, and was pushed to deuce just once on her serve. In all of those tormented public beatings, she has won only three sets – in the semi-finals of the 2005 Australian Open, in a clay tournament in Charleston three years later and in Doha in 2013.
“However, she can not compete with Sharapova’s media-friendly combination of blonde Siberian beauty and sponsor-friendly image control – which has meant Sharapova, 28, has waltzed away with a fortune of £125 million and counting”.
And make no mistake, the American has every intention of going to the ball.
Sharapova led on serve in the second set but it was an illusion. Everything that Shaparova tried – and she did hit some fine forehands – failed to dent the Williams dominance. The hum that rattled around the stadium was one of barely contained pity.
She attacked Radwanska’s modest serves, drilled balls in the corners and didn’t give the Pole any time to work her off-speed magic.
With the likes of Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer in their ranks, the Spanish men have had little trouble making deep runs at grand slams in the last decade.
Sharapova still hadn’t shaken off the nerves on her serve and Serena made her pay in the fifth game, reading the Russian’s deliveries perfectly and punishing them with ground-strokes too deep and powerful to stop.
“I had to solve a lot of problems with that internally”.
