Miami Head Coach Al Golden Sends A Message To The Critics
For the second week in a row, inclement weather caused a delay in the first half of the Hurricanes game, and for the second straight week it didn’t matter as the Canes rolled over Florida Atlantic 44-20 in Boca Raton on Friday night.
Miami fans have had about enough of coach Al Golden and many feel Golden is coaching for his job this year. “We had a lot of unforced errors early”. “We understand it’s the game that can move us up and have us shock the world”, said FAU’s Greg Howell, who ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Owls” loss at Tulsa on Saturday.
FAU took the opening drive of the second half to the UM nine and tied the game with a 32-yard field goal by Joseph. Two FAU fumbles, including one by Warren on a monster hit by junior defensive back Jamal Carter, kept Miami in the lead at the half.
Running back Joe Yearby had an outstanding game as he finished with 18 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown run. “I played them my first year here and I’m looking forward to playing them again and having a better chance in the game”. They’re a heck of a football team. We don’t make the same mistakes, so that was great. I said ‘They can’t get anymore.’ And that’s where we are as a team though.
That eventually happened, but much later, after Miami’s depth and open-field speed finally showed itself and after viewers in other states turned off the tube and headed for bed.
And it was still a 20-20 game in the third quarter, before the Hurricanes pulled away with 24 unanswered points. FAU’s defense let up 618 total yards and they will need to make some changes with Miami coming into town.
FAU outplayed Miami for long stretches of the first half, tying the game at 17 when Warren scored midway through the second quarter.
Miami sophomore running back Joseph Yearby (2) evades an FAU defender on his way to the end zone, making the score 14-3. One of the players he modeled his game after while growing up was former Miami star Clinton Portis. The Owls won’t win many games that way. “You never know what is going to be thrown at you”. “We faced some adversity, we stayed together, leaders led and nobody panicked”. FAU will try to get its first win of the season next week as they will host the Buffalo Bulls.
“With being full, sold-out for the first time ever, all that just adds more to the emotion of the night”, FAU athletic director Patrick Chun said. “We will be on national television, in our home stadium”.
“The sellout is a true reflection of how our community has embraced our football program and Coach [Charlie] Partridge”, FAU Director of Athletics Pat Chun said.
It just didn’t come with the fairytale ending.
