Suspect in Mississippi campus shooting apologized in note for killing
One of his history professors at Emporia State University where Schmidt studied described him as one of the “brightest students” she’d ever taught.
Police asked the caller his name, but he doesn’t want to give it.
Lamb was on the run after authorities declared him a suspect when Prentiss was found dead in the Gautier, Miss. she lived in with him; and Schmidt was found dead in his campus office. Carla Hairston said she was 15 and Lamb was 20 when they met through mutual friends.
According to The New York Times, Delta State University geography and education instructor Shannon Lamb, 45, was crossing a bridge over the Mississippi River late last night when his license plate was picked up by a plate-reading device.
147-a-08-(Charles Bingham, chief, Cleveland Police Department, at news conference)-“that was heard”-Cleveland, Mississippi Police Chief Charles Bingham says suspect Shannon Lamb shot himself after police picked up his trail crossing a bridge over the Mississippi River”. He did not provide an explanation. “Very sorry”, the handwritten note read.
She says Lamb’s body is being taken to the state crime lab in Pearl for autopsy.
Lamb received a doctorate in education from Delta State University in the spring of 2015, according to his resume posted on the university’s website.
Lamb’s demise ended a harrowing day of lockdowns, SWAT groups and building-by-building searches on the three, 500-student campus.
“She always wanted to help other people”, close friend Lindsay Knowles told the newspaper.
Police have not released a motive for either killing.
Responding to the school shooting, William LaForge, the president of Delta State University said the shooting was a ‘random act between two individuals.’
A civilian staff member with the United Nations mission in Central African Republic is alleged to have committed sexual exploitation, bringing the total number of those accused of sexual abuse to 17 since the peacekeeping mission arrived to help stabilize the country, the U.N. said Tuesday. No less mysterious is why Lamb first killed his domestic partner, a woman identified as Amy Prentiss, 41, in a town 300 miles away. Hours later, after being pursued by police, Lamb fatally shot himself, police stated.
Delta State had planned to celebrate its 90th anniversary Tuesday – some of the festivities were even supposed to be in Jobe Hall where the shooting happened – but LaForge says that event will be rescheduled.
A 7 p.m. candlelight vigil is scheduled at Delta State to remember Schmidt.
Schmidt had roots in Kansas, where his aunt Barbara Schmidt lives.
