Suspect in fatal shooting at Mississippi university kills himself

“Lamb did not provide an explanation or a time frame for the shooting, nor did he indicate that he meant to harm anyone else”, Detective Matt Hoggatt said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Police in Gautier said they found a note reading: “I am so sorry I wish I could take it back. I loved Amy and she is the only person who ever loved me”, the note, signed Shannon Lamb, read.

At some point during the day, Gautier Police Chief Dante Elben said, Lamb spoke with police and told them he “wasn’t going to jail.”

Prentiss, who had a 19-year-old daughter from an earlier marriage, was found dead in her home. He instead instructed authorities to “take care of her [Prentiss]”.

Police have not released a motive for either shooting.

The professor gave the students chairs to throw if the shooter came in, said King’s friend, Christopher Walker Todd.

Tributes have been paid to the second victim, Ethan Schmidt, a history teacher at the university in the city of Cleveland.

He studied at Emporia State University in Kansas and was president of his fraternity and student government.

“He did a tremendous job as a history professor”, Delta State University President William LaForge. “People always say there are six degrees of separation, but it just seems like that’s getting so much smaller”.

“He was nice”, she said.

Police revealed on Tuesday that prior to the shooting, Lamb dialled 911 and told the dispatcher he killed 41-year-old Amy Prentiss at their home, some 300 miles away in Gautier.

“It was probably the scariest thing I have been through in a while”, said a student who had Schmidt as a professor. Carla Hairston said she and Lamb both grew up in Greenville, Mississippi.

The 4,000-student Cleveland, Mississippi, college was on lockdown for most of Monday as authorities from local and state agencies searched for Lamb. Some friends said his problems stemmed from “being bitten”.

Anthony, now a professor at St. Mary University in Leavenworth, Kan., said that Schmidt helped him craft his first syllabus and hone the art of the college lecture.

“What a tragedy! I took Dr. Schmidt’s American history course as a freshman in 2008”.
