Disney working on new ‘Mary Poppins’ movie
To that end, her estate will be involved in the making of the new movie. The story will be set in the 1930s, two decades after the original.
Because of her we all know that a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, and who can forget the words to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? He helmed the franchise sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and most recently directed the Broadway musical adaptation Into the Woods.
The report states that songwriting duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will compose original songs and a new score. According to Variety, Disney has reached far into its vault and unearthed the two-time Academy Award-winning classic, Mary Poppins.
Looks like Disney isn’t quite done adding to their already extensive list of live-action remakes. The original “Mary Poppins” was, too – but that was half a century ago.
The director is Rob Marshall, who helmed Disney’s successful screen version of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” a year ago.
Mary Poppins is certainly an interesting property to revisit, though whether the story will be able to connect with today’s youngsters is hard to say at this point.
David Magee, of “Finding Neverland” and “Life of Pi“, is slated to be the screenwriter. That film took its plot largely from the first installment in the book series, while Marshall’s film will use events from a subsequent storyline.

The film, which featured songs by Robert and Richard Sherman, won Andrews the Oscar for best actress.
