The beloved Disney musical Mary Poppins is getting a sequel from Chicago

Disney has just greenlit a new muscial Mary Poppins movie. The story will be set in the 1930s, two decades after the original.

Sources say that it will be set 20 years after the first film took place, using storylines from P.L. Travers’ children’s books detailing Mary’s further adventures with the Banks family.

The report states that songwriting duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will compose original songs and a new score.

Disney has recently released live-action versions of its most beloved animated films such as Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella.

Disney is working on a number of other remakes of classic films including The Jungle Book and an Aladdin prequel. Another stalwart actress who has already played Mary Poppins, is Kristen Bell of “Frozen” fame.

In addition, the movie will probably also lean more towards how P.L. Travers originally envisioned Mary Poppins’ story playing out on the big screen.

Disney will develop the film with an all-star musical production team, according toEntertainment Weekly, that includes director Rob Marshall, who won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2002 for musical Chicago.

Mary Poppins has been enjoying a relative resurgence in recent years. And, in the immortal words of Mary Poppins, “come buy my bag full of crumbs”.

Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke starred in the 1964 original which grossed a massive $100 million at the time and landed an impressive five Oscars.

The original film’s creation was the central focus of Disney’s 2013 drama Saving Mr Banks starring Emma Thompson as Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. David Magee (Finding Neverland) will write the screenplay.
