Ad for ‘Ireland’s ancient warrior sport’ at Fenway Park is brilliantly OTT
The sport of hurling returns to Fenway Park for the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival in November, when 2015 All-Ireland Finalist Galway will take-on Dublin in an exhibition comprising some of the top hurling players from the Emerald Isle.
The “Super 11” format was developed in recent years by the GPA to allow hurling to be played in stadiums and venues all over the world where the pitch size is smaller than the traditional hurling pitch.
“It will be occasion to remember on November 22 as two excellent teams from Dublin and Galway demonstrate the best skills of our games”. There will be no points for shots through the uprights.
“Boston and Ireland have such a strong connection and it is thrilling to see one of the country’s native games will be played on our city’s most beloved ball park”, added Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.
“This a truly wonderful opportunity for us to exhibit hurling at a high profile USA sporting venue, and there is none more iconic than the home of the Red Sox”, Gaelic Players Association chairman Dónal Óg Cusack said Tuesday, via The Irish Times. The festival will consist of a performance from the Dropkick Murphys, a Boston based American Celtic punk band. The event will also be streamed live for hurling fans globally on www.redsox.com/irishfestival. Back then All-Ireland Champions Cork defeated an American Hurling selection.
A one-off hurling match between Dublin and Galway is set to be played in Boston in November and the promoter’s ad is as exaggerated and over-hyped as you could hope for.
Launch events took place at Croke Park and Fenway Park on Tuesday to mark the count down to the game.
Additional details about the Irish Festival will be continuously posted at the event website.
