De Blasio, under fire from Cuomo, does not back down
“The Albany status quo has not served the people of New York City”, he said. “And I think it’s important to make clear to the people of this city, who are depending on me to produce for them, what’s really going on in Albany, what’s really going on in Washington”.
Rebuking Mr. Cuomo for implying that the mayor doesn’t understand the struggle of working with a Republican State Senate, Mr.de Blasio, a fellow Democrat, insisted he can “work with anyone”.
Cuomo said de Blasio was “clearly frustrated” by the legislative session and that even he did not get everything he wanted, citing a law to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate police killings that did not pass.
That could be good news for upstate if the governor goes out of his way to shower political and financial favor on upstate while leaving the city to fend for itself, with the idea being that voters will, in two years, turn out the first-term mayor, blaming him for the poor state of relations with – and neglect from – Albany.
“I personally am trying to lose weight, so I’m staying away from pasta”, de Blasio said.
The governor and mayor, who had regularly described themselves as friends, haven’t spoken in recent days but said they will work together going forward.
After Mayor de Blasio publicly blasted him following the last legislative session, both constituents and the media have been monitoring what appears to be a growing, uncomfortable rift between the two.
Asked to name a single achievement by Bill de Blasio as mayor, Governor Cuomo politely declined during an interview on the PIX11 Morning News Thursday.
“My most illustrious predecessor Fiorello La Guardia didn’t bite his tongue”. I think he called them as he saw them. “I think he was the greatest mayor we ever had and it’s my job to speak truth as I see it”, Mr.de Blasio said at an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn.
“But I can work with anyone, including people I have disagreements with”, the mayor continued.
“We actually saw eye-to-eye on a lot of the issues around the transportation bill and we’re gonna try to work in common cause”, he added.
He then took off for an eight-day vacation, returning late Wednesday night. Alfonse D’Amato to make amends over Italian food at a “pasta summit”. “But I do appreciate the goodwill offer”.
After the parade, Cuomo left without attending the ceremony where de Blasio will give all of the World Cup champions keys to the city.
